Özet:

This research study seeks to explore how Lesson Study, a teacher-led professional development model, is conducted by English teachers working at a foundation university and how being involved in Lesson Study is reflected on teachers' professional development. Designed as a holistic single case study, this qualitative research study has been carried out throughout an academic semester with the participation of four English teachers. Data has been collected through observations, individual and focus group interviews, reflective reports and document analysis. The main findings of the study show that Lesson Study may be implemented at tertiary level in English teaching provided that some additions to the model are made, preliminary preparation is done and enough guidance and counseling is available for the teachers. It is also found out that teacher-led professional development has positively affected teacher professional development. Teachers participating in Lesson Study stated that Lesson Study has enabled them to; jointly plan lessons in a more student-centered and effective way, eliminate their prejudices against classroom observations, gain insights about how they can observe students in a classroom setting, try out different teaching methods, informed them about how they can gather data about a lesson and how they can analyze that lesson using the data they collected. The results of the study indicate that Lesson Study is a promising and potentially effective professional development model that helps increase teachers' pedagogical content knowledge in terms of lesson planning, giving instructions, understanding students and using technology. It also encourages teachers to think reflectively, improves their research skills and increases their motivation for professional development with its focus on teacher collaboration.
